I stumbled across this the website for this group of illustrators, Handsome Frank, on the creative review website and particularly liked Matt Taylor (artwork above). I'm probably more of a designer so I don't have much to base on what I think is good illustration. This, in my opinion, is kind of freaky but really simple and beautiful.
