Typography 19/10

I have to admit this was the workshop I was most looking forward to because, well, I'm a bit of a typography geek. As I'm finding with quite a few of the workshops, a couple of the exercises we did were similar to those on my Foundation course but they're important nevertheless. After delving into some theory we did an exercise which encouraged us to look at why a piece of text needs punctuation, spacing etc. and whether this can alter the meaning. The group below separated out the words into syllables which, interestingly, made it harder to read.

We then started looking at the anatomy of type and used our name to study the different elements closer.

Next, we took this further by choosing one letter and played around with it's shape and elements.

Last of all, we looked at how manipulating type by changing the typeface, weight, position within a space, colour etc. can enhance or alter a word's meaning. My word was 'masculine'.

There were some really interesting and successful outcomes, below are a couple of examples.
