Firstly we were set a task which took leaf out of the awesome Bruno Munari's book 'Air Made Visible: A Visual Reader'...literally. The task was to 'experiment with the possibilities for depiction that lie within the structure of an oak leaf' and we did this using a photocopy of a leaf image and tracing paper. This exercise was really interesting because it made us see how shapes and forms, like the leaf, can directly inspire and lead to effective designs.
We then destroyed a couple of newspapers each to complete the next task: postcard size collages using images only. After doing a couple we reviewed each others work and realised the student's work which used the white space most effectively were the strongest. We then applied this theory in our next task which was five collages (above)- the first with one cutting, the second with two, the third with three etc.
Above are a few examples of my classmate's work- I wish I remembered who they belong to but I just thought it was interesting how a group of students who were all given the same task to complete- and the same newspapers and therefore images to use- carried it out in such different ways and produced some great pieces.
