To begin with we joined the tutorial groups that we'll be in were each given a copy of the brief. The brief was split into 3 variables, each with 6 options which were narrowed down to one per variable by rolling a dice. My group weren't very keen on leaving their brief up to chance but in the end we had our 3 'random' variables. We then used Kipling's 'Six Thinking Men'- how, when, what, where, who and why- to ask questions of our brief.
We then split our group into 3 and each took a variable to research for the afternoon. We found it quite difficult to go from thinking about the brief as a whole to then looking at only one variable as it was hard to research our message 'educate yourself' out of context. This did mean, however, that our research was much broader.
I was very unsure about the brief when we were first given it because it seemed like such a different approach to that of my Foundation course last year. Back then we were given a theme to kick off our project rather than a specific audience, message and client which to me, now, seems really strange and not very industry based at all.
