08/10 Week One

So, week one of my course is drawing to a close and I’ve been quite necessarily yanked out of my comfort zone to start my first blog. Great. This photo was taken during a group activity out and around Elephant and Castle and I think it does a reasonable job of illustrating some of the things I’ve found that I’m learning. As designers we need to be looking everywhere for our inspiration and ideas. This is important especially when living in a city, like London, where we are unceasingly bomarded by words and images. Every available surface around us is plastered with advertisments telling us what to eat, feel, think and buy and I think it is vital to success as a designer to mentally sift through this jumble of visual material and take note of the things that will inspire and help us progress. This image, although at a first glance quite typical and uninteresting, is a wonderful contrast of blunt, bold and vibrant graffiti with the mundane, tired elephant statue I grew to hate after walking past it everyday for a year. It is the perfect example of how our inspiration can be taken from anywhere but not everywhere and how something accidentally beautiful can generate a flood of thought.
